About Pilates

Pilates is named after Joseph Pilates (1880 – 1967) – an exercise trainer known to have been well ahead of his time when he devised his exercise method. Pilates differs from other exercise methods in that it focuses on strengthening weak areas, whilst lengthen tight areas, often in the same exercise. It always works towards good postural alignment, following the natural curves of the spine. This alignment of the spine is known as “Neutral Spine” in Pilates. It can be described as the most efficient and least stressful way of carrying your body in static and dynamic movement, helping you to counteract the negative effects that modern living has on your posture. It cleverly targets the deep stabilising muscles enabling you to have more control over your movement patterns.
